Drive Landscape Modernization with Oracle Database@AWS

Enterprises have long relied on Oracle Exadata and RAC to power mission-critical applications that have intensive compute demands, thanks to Exadata’s exceptional performance for critical database landscapes. Exadata-dependent workloads sometimes kept organizations tied to legacy data centers as the last major obstacle preventing a full transition to hyperscaler platforms like AWS.

With Oracle Database@AWS widely available in multiple regions, customers can now deploy Exadata-backed Oracle services physically within AWS facilities, instead of connecting to Oracle platforms in an external OCI footprint.

A fully modernized service offering, Oracle Database@AWS combines AWS compute and services with Oracle’s industry-leading database platform to deliver a tightly integrated solution that lays the foundation for ongoing business modernization while maximizing application performance.

Designed to promote seamless transformations, customers can rapidly migrate Exadata landscapes to AWS with minimal application changes and manage them within their existing AWS provider relationship. This service delivers near-zero latency and Exadata performance advantages by integrating AWS and Oracle databases in a single cloud environment through AWS-native tooling such as AWS Management Console, Command Line Interface (CLI), APIs, and monitoring.

Addressing both technical and business considerations, Oracle Database@AWS provides a unified delivery experience between Oracle and AWS, including collaborative support, management, and operations. The service simplifies business operations because you receive a single invoice from AWS and retain your Oracle support rewards.

AI & Integration Capabilities

Oracle Database@AWS opens up new opportunities for innovation and modernization by including new generative AI applications using Oracle AI Database capabilities including Oracle AI Vector Search, as well as Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock foundation models.

Because the service is native, bi-directional, and low-latency, not an external connection, you have real-time data access and a simplified architecture with unified security and operations. This enables integration of your Oracle Exadata workloads with

a number of other AWS services, including AWS CloudFormation, AWS CloudTrail, Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon EventBridge, Amazon S3, and Amazon VPC Lattice.

Project Snapshot

Early adopters of Oracle Database@AWS have realized measurable improvements using Oracle Database@AWS. One of Protera’s clients is a large FinTech enterprise with a modern, microservices-based application that is core to their business operations. The app requires true 24x7 availability and maximum performance to deliver the outputs required to power the business.

A long-term Oracle Exadata user, the organization adopted a Cloud First strategy with AWS as the preferred platform, but were maintaining their core app in a private cloud because there was not an equivalent Exadata solution on AWS.

With the introduction of Oracle Database@AWS, our client was able to develop an achievable, structured application modernization strategy. The Oracle Database@AWS service allowed for improved performance and a migration that requires minimal application modifications, while combining AWS compute and services with Oracle’s industry-leading database platform to support the application.

Challenges

The customer recognized that the lack of automation, elasticity, and AI in the private cloud environment hindered innovation and agility. They had the strategic goal to migrate to AWS, but the lack of Oracle RAC on AWS was a limiting factor.

  • Private cloud hardware resulted in long lead times for environment changes

  • No scalability because of aging hardware (Oracle built on physical nodes)

  • Lack of Infrastructure as Code, microservices and DevOps for the core application

Solution Features & Benefits

The solution integrates the strengths of AWS, Oracle, and Protera to deliver a fully packaged, end-to-end service that includes right-sizing, design, migration, and ongoing support. It sets the stage for the customer to fast-track application modernization utilizing Oracle and AWS services, backed by Protera’s expert migration and enterprise managed services.
